Privacy Policy
Last updated 1 October 2026
This policy explains what Monk Apnea (the free app at apnea.robmonk.ca) keeps, where, and why. In short: your training stays on your phone; an account to save it online is optional; and each session is also shared as an anonymous record that can't be traced back to you.
1. On your phone
Your sessions, personal bests, custom tables, schedule and settings are saved in your browser's storage on your device. They stay there until you clear the app's data or delete them in the app. History → Save backup writes them to a file you control.
2. Anonymous research records (everyone)
After each session, the app sends one record to our database containing:
- the kind of training and its settings (for example the CO₂ table's hold and recovery times, the countdown style), lung volume, whether it was finished, and its length;
- for each breath hold: planned and held time, contraction times, and heart rate once a second if a sensor was connected;
- the year and week of the session (not the day or time);
- a rough picture of your progress, worked out on your phone: weeks training and sessions so far (in ranges such as "8–15 weeks"), sessions a week lately, and your personal best now and four weeks ago, rounded to 15 seconds.
A record never contains your name, email, account, device name or ID, location, or anything that links it to your other records or to you. Records are sent without signing in. Because they can't be traced back to anyone, they are not personal information, and they can't be found or deleted for a particular person. They are kept to study training and progression and to improve the app, including building virtual coaching, and may be shared in summary form (for example, average progress across all users).
If you are offline, records wait on your phone and are sent later.
3. Your account (optional)
If you sign in (with Google, or with a link sent to your email), we keep:
- your email address, and your name if you use Google, to identify your account;
- a copy of your app data (sessions, personal bests, tables, schedule, settings), so it is backed up and kept in step on your devices.
Only you can read your account data; it is not used for the research records and not shared with anyone. Sign out at any time: your data stays on your phone. Delete account (Account screen) deletes your account and everything saved under it online.
4. Who stores it
Accounts and data are stored with Google Firebase (Google LLC), which also handles sign-in, in its [data location to be confirmed] region. Google processes this data on our behalf under its own security and privacy terms. When you use "Continue with Google", Google also handles that sign-in under its privacy policy. The app itself is hosted by Cloudflare. We don't use advertising, tracking or analytics services, and we don't sell data.
5. Heart-rate sensors
Heart rate goes straight from your sensor to the app over Bluetooth. It is saved with your sessions on your phone, in your account if you have one, and in the anonymous records. The sensor's name is not saved.
6. Children
The app is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly create accounts for them.
7. Your choices and rights
You can see, export, change and delete your data in the app, and delete your account at any time. To ask about your data, or to make a complaint, contact us below. You can also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
8. Changes
We'll update this page when anything changes, and ask you to accept again if the change matters.
